- e-File your return. You can detect most errors before you submit your return. You will receive an acknowledgement that we received your return.
- Get your refund using direct deposit. It’s faster and safer than getting a paper check through the mail.
- Pay electronically. It’s the easiest and quickest way to make your payment.
Avoid the five most common filing errors.
- Sign the paper return -- both spouses must sign a joint return.
- Include the total amount of tax withheld during the year. Correctly add your multiple W-2 statements that you list on your IT-2 Summary of Federal Wage Tax Statements.
- Indicate on the return if you owe New York City or Yonkers tax.
- Use your correct identification number on your return. This is the number issued by the Social Security Administration or Internal Revenue Service. (If the identification number on your W-2 statement is wrong, contact your employer to obtain a corrected W-2 statement.)
- Don’t be late: File your return or extension request before the due date.
For specific filing instructions, refer to the instructions of the return that you will file: IT-150/201 Instructions or IT-203 Instructions.
